The Internet Archive and the National Emergency Library

What is the Internet Archive? It's a collection of all types of media: books, movies, music, images, audio, web pages, software, etc. A while ago, they came to my attention because of their announcement of the National Emergency Library, which is, in their words, "a temporary collection of books that supports emergency remote teaching, research activities, independent scholarship, and intellectual stimulation while universities, schools, training centers, and libraries are closed." They operate the same way as a normal library, just online, lending out digital copies of books for two-week periods. However, the National Emergency Library has temporarily suspended all wait-lists for checking out books, allowing any number of people to check out a book at a given time in light of the pandemic, at least until June 30, 2020. Google's Search Operators

Many people know how to search Google. Its easy, right? Just navigate to Google.com and enter what you would like to learn about. What if I told you that the way you have been searching is wrong. How? Well, by using Google's Search Operators, you can more accurately and more easily find the information that you are looking for. Say you want to find a line from a song, speech, book, or other line of text. You may not remember the title, but you go and search: it was the best of times, it was the worst of times . Wrong. Now, lets try it with Google's Search Operators. Using quotes around your search query tells Google to search for that phrase in its entirety. Lets try it again: "it was the best of times it was the worst of times". Much better, now you are searching more accurately.

Google Books

WHAT IS GOOGLE BOOKS? Google Books is a service from Google that searches the full text of books and magazines that Google has scanned, converts it, and stores it in their digital database. A click on a result from Google Books opens an interface in which the user may view pages from the book, if out of copyright or if the copyright owner has given permission. Books in the public domain are available in "full view" and free for download. For in-print books where permission has been granted, the number of viewable pages is limited to a "preview". For books where permission for a "preview" has been refused, only permission for "snippets" may be allowed, but the full text of the book is searchable on this limited basis.
