Google Cardbord for education

Google cardboard is a cheap introduction hardware package to the world of virtual reality.
Google cardboard first premiered in 2014, making them one of the first affordable options for
students to engage with virtual reality technology. Google cardboard is a do it yourself kit,
including a cardboard cutout, rubber bands, and special magnification lenses. The kit retailed
from ten to twenty dollars per unit, with over 10 million being sold. It gained popularity among
public schools, who used the technology for younger children. The technology was cheap and
plentiful, seeding interest in future virtual reality technology.

Google cardboard has many applications in the classroom. One of the most notable is the use
of virtual reality to bring students into the time period or location being taught about. Google itself
has supported various virtual reality tours for the classroom, showing architecture, museums,
and even historical reenactments, which can be found on youtube. Independent content creators
have contributed greatly to the rise in VR, using their unique networks to provide material which
can be viewed in virtual reality. These technologies can make a world of difference in the
classroom. They appeal to many senses of each student, creating a more effective medium for
learning.

With a rise in VR technology in the past several years, more and more content for google
cardboard has been created. Now there are thousands of videos for students and teachers to
use to further the curriculum. In my own experience, I have visited ancient ruins in Spanish class
to learn about indigenous cultures.

These 360 degree viewing experiences allow for more engagement with the material. Students can choose which aspects of the experience they want to focus on. For example, athletic students may focus more on the ancient sport events, while others may enjoy the architecture of the structures. With all aspects of Virtual Reality learning considered, the technology brings a unique method of learning into the classroom which appeals to all different types of students. With Ashland High School purchasing dozens of sets, I am excited to see what the future brings to my own education in regards to virtual reality.
