Robots in Our Everyday Lives
As the oldest child in the house I am the only one who can drive so I am tasked with picking up my sister, driving to school, and even getting groceries. This past weekend I went to the store to get the typical grocery list my dad had given me of fruits veggies and snack foods. As I am carting around I hear a beeping and look over to be greeted by a maybe 6 foot tall robot with a camera and googly eyes named Marty. This is apparently a form of new technology that the stores are using to keep shoppers safe by detecting spills, falling objects, or missing items on the shelves. The robot uses eight cameras to detect any one of those things, then the images go through and are looked at by humans at the control center in Philadelphia, and if there is a spill the loudspeaker will go off indicating the needed help. In my opinion this new technology ca be very useful, but there are things people must watch out for. I'm not saying that the robot will take over the groceries store, but it could accidentally run into things causing its own spills, malfunction and get stick somewhere in the store, or even run into people. These things aren't that bad and can easily be fixed with human intervention, so there are really no huge problems when it comes to the robot. The benefits of the Marty Robot are great as spills can be detected and fixed easier and anything that can bring harm to the shoppers can be altered before someone gets hurt. The other benefit is that the robots are cool to look at and simply watch as the go up and down the ales. Plus the kids are going to love the robot and it's googly eyes. This picture is actual one I took on my own when I first noticed the robot. The future is truly here as humans had to program this robot to follow instruction, be able to detect when it had to turn, and obviously be able to take pictures of spills and alert humans of them. Using the eight cameras and lasers to make it's way around the store Marty is making Stop & Shops safer everywhere.

I saw this robot and had no idea what it was doing. You suggested the robot could cause it's own issues, but is that really the case? Do they have a history of causing issues? I think it is interesting that something like this is important enough for a store to have. Is it replacing employees in some way? So may questions. Thanks!
