Our last final project in STAT was to connect with a teach and teach them about a computer science tool and even build something utilizing that tool for them. I connected with Mr. Mosh in the English hallway as he was my English teacher this year. We worked with the Carvy Machine to the left, and wood working to create a sign for his classroom he has been wanting. The sign is for a wall of unwanted words he wishes us to keep out of our essays. First I made the sign by cutting wood to the right lengths and then painting on the words Diction Graveyard. Then I added two pieces of plastic that I carved using the machine as decoration. To the back of the sign I added hooks so he could successfully hang it to the peg board. The sign itself came out amazing and he appreciated a ton.
As for the computer science aspect of it all I had to use my knowledge of the machine to create the piece and teach him a little about the machine as well. First to make the two decorations I had to design and carve them successfully and that took some trial and error. Finding the correct measurements and even testing how deep I should carve all took a little adjusting here and there. The machine also needed to be reconnected to the computer so I did that with the help of a classmate of mine named Nate. Once I had the decorations I liked I glued them to the wood to add something to the sign.
In explaining the machine and others to my teacher I talked about ho the Carvy is simple to use and really effect if you need things carved quickly. For an English teacher this might only be used to make more signs for the classroom but for other teachers, especially science teachers, this can be used to help with experiments in the classroom. I also talked about the 3D Printer with Mr. Mosh and as a very avid Star Wars fan told him of all the cool things he could 3D Print such as a small figurine of Darth Vader himself. In both these tools and also the Glow Fordge. I explained how simple it was to get connected and start designing. All one has to do is create and account and design there model in the simple and understandable design space and then send it to the connected machine. Teachers and students alike can use all of these machines to create signs or materials needed for the everyday classroom and it is all easily accessible and done with the help of elasticated tools in MAKER Space. I enjoyed this last senior project very much and loved creating something that will stay with my teacher even when I finish high school and that will be very soon too!! Mr. Mosh will enjoy his sign and now have the knowledge on how to create even more things using the STAT and MAKE team and the Ashland Invention Center.
Here is the final product of the sign and the two things I carved are the black tombstone and skull and bones to add to the graveyard affect. If you ever want to see it you can find in Mr. Mosh's room in the English hallway!
