Carvey the Carving Machine

The makerspace's newest machine, Carvey, enables students to see their designs come to life through woodcutting. Using the simple tools at easel.inventables.com/carvey, you can draw a design and let the machine do the rest. The website allows you to draw simple shapes and choose to dig them out or only carve the outline.

The app is easy to get the hang of. Some of the essential buttons are circled above, though the website explains everything for you. Drawing is made simple, and the image trace theoretically lets you carve out any image. This allows you to get creative with what you want to make. And, despite what many people may think, the carvings come out surprisingly smooth. The image above is the layout for this carving:

There is a lot of applications for the Carvey. I personally used it to create a nameplate style plaque, but you can do almost anything with it, albeit on a small scale. Decorations of intricate designs can be  easily made and attached to projects. Outside of decoration, the Carvey can also be used to design pieces for a project. You can carve out the walls of a box in whatever shape you want, or you can make easy rounded edges so you don't have to worry about smoothing out a hand-sawed piece of wood. You can create a gift for family or friends by making something simple and personalizing it with a special carving. If you want more ideas, you can visit https://www.inventables.com/projects. The Carvey provides a one-stop-shop for easy wood carving.

And, if all else fails, it's pretty fun to watch:

The Carvey allows for easy creation of almost anything in wood. It's an easy way to add a personalized touch to any project or to make an already special project even more well-done. Overall, the Carvey has applications such that it has a use in almost any project that uses wood. It's a great tool to learn to use so that all your future projects can be personalized and decorated however you want.
