Kahoot! Educational Tutorial

The educational tool that will be examined today is the Kahoot! App. The Kahoot app is a great way to improve student participation in class and knowledge of topic. This is a great way to cater to all learning styles. The following is a tutorial on how, as a teacher, to best implement this technological tool into the classroom.

Step 1: Design the Kahoot.
Depending on what the context of the course is there may be a Kahoot! already made around the topic. If there isn’t, or is the one that is isn’t specific enough you can make a Kahoot! yourself. This is an incredibly easy process. Go to Play Kahoot! And create an account. Once you have an account this allows you to view and create Kahoot! Games. When creating a Kahoot! it is important to keep in mind these simple principles. Keep the questions straightforward and allow a generous amount of time to see the question to accommodate for all people. The best Kahoot!’s have one word answers because it is straining on the students to read four paragraphs before making an answer. Pictures also help if they are relevant to a specific questions. An appropriate number of questions is anywhere from 20 to 40. This allows multiple opportunities for students to come back from a loss at the beginning of the game. It may also be a good idea to have multiple smaller question Kahoot!s to allow for a bigger winners pool.

Step 2: Run the Kahoot!
A good time to have a Kahoot! Is on a review day before a test or quiz. To start up the Kahoot! simply log in and activate the one that you wish to run. You must have a projector system to show the questions though. If kids do not have cell phones offer to get an ipad so that they can participate. If there are no ipads or computers available, let them work with someone. Once the kids are typing in the game codes, eliminate any inappropriate or joke names until you have the correct number of participants. Once all this is done it is time for step 3.

Step 3: Administrate the Kahoot!
It is pretty easy from here on out. All the teacher has to do is press next when all of the participants have answered the question. If you notice on a specific question that most of the kids answered wrong, be sure to clarify the logic that brings the kids to the right answer. At the end of the Kahoot! a neat way to congratulate the winners is to grant then 1, 2, or 3 bonus points on whatever quiz or test they are taking.

 Conclusion:
To conclude, Kahoot! is a great way to get kids involved in learning material in a  fun and interactive way. Kahoot! can also be played in groups or in partners. A fun bonus activity is to get the kids themselves to try and write the questions and multiple choice answers and chose the best ones to include in the final Kahoot!. This tool can be carried across any topic or course and that is what makes it so versatile a learning technology.
