Reading the Subtext

Reading the Subtext

Subtext is an app that was deigned for students in classrooms. Students are able to join classrooms and collaborate on their notes or keep their notes private. Subtext also allows users to make comments on and highlight the text in ebooks. With this now students have the ability to annotate books easily and mark up books that they were previously unable to mark up due to it needing to be reused. Subtext on top of all these features keeps track of where the readers are.

Every student in Ashland High School is required to take one english course per year adding up to 4 courses in their high school career. In all english courses students are encouraged to take notes, which is way easier if they can write the notes in the book which up until now they needed a pen, sticky notes and to put the book down to write the notes as they needed. Now they are able to write directly in their books as they read. Teachers are also able to make students understand the text by embedding a link to a video or some of their notes. Teachers can even put in a quiz to the reading and see the results in real time to see how their students are understanding the text. Subtext allows teachers to have and students to have an easier time understanding their readings.

Teaching becomes easier with the assistance of subtext. Teachers are able to create groups to send certain levels of content to their students. With students at all different levels in high school, it could be helpful to divide the students based on level, similarly to the class they are put into. Teachers can also show students right in the text articles that provide background information and help the students better understand the text.
