Did you ever want to go to school when you were sick or on vacation? Well, with telepresence robots, now students can log onto a computer at their house, and connect to a robot at school so they can participate in class. A telepresence robot is combination of a webcam and screen mounted on a controllable body. The screen displays the face of the human controller to imitate their actual presence, and the webcam relays back to the human controller the people and surroundings in front of the robot. There are two main different type of telepresence robots; either the tabletop rotating stand, or the actual moving base, both with the webcam and screen on top. A school could either have 6-10 movable telepresence robots to be signed in from students at home, or 1 stationary telepresence robot per classroom where students can log into a different robot for each class.
This relatively new method of obtaining information missed in class has many benefits over the traditional methods of either staying after class to make up work or asking friends for a copy of their notes. By being able to be present in the classroom during the actual lesson, you can still receive the full, explained lesson given by the teacher, and even participate in the class to get the same level of understanding as if you were actually present in school. Also, students can complete classwork by printing out the worksheet at home or taking notes in their journals as well as staying on top of homework without having to spend extra of their time and the teacher's time staying after school to sort out all the content they missed.
Missing school now is no longer a stressful catchup process with the ability to just call in from home to a telepresence robot at school.
