Remote Connection to Other Computers

Computers are a very useful piece of technology in every day life. They have become quite a dependency as well. Therefore, when complications become involved and errors start to arouse, people are going to need help.

A great feature to computers is their ability to link to one another. The interconnectivity in today's world is incredibly useful to spread information across a wide margin very efficiently and in a timely manor.  Linking computers has actually advanced to the point where a user on a different computer system all together can remotely connect to and control another system.

The first thing to consider is the type of operating system you use. Most people use Mac and Windows and this informational tutorial will focus on these two. Now, what type of connection are you seeking?  Mac to Mac, Windows to Mac, Mac to Windows or Windows to Windows? All of these connections are possible and not difficult to do.

Mac to Mac

Mac computers have a preconfigured program that specifically deals with remote desktop connections to other macs. In order to enable this setting, make sure you have administrative privileges or that you're using an administrative account.

First go to system preferences and click 'Sharing' under the "Internet & Wireless" section

Next, in the white column to the left of the box, make sure that screen sharing is checked. If it will not allow you to click the box, you will need to click the lock icon on the bottom left corner of the window and type in an administrative account and password combination.Screen Shot 2014-01-10 at 10.50.39 AM

If you wish to prompt a password connection (when another computer attempts to access your screen) you can click the button that says 'Computer Settings...' and follow the instructions.

Make sure that you enable screen sharing on both parties' computers. Once this is done you will be able to connect to that person's screen. To do this simply go to finder and, toward the left under the "Shared" row, find the name of the computer you are trying to remotely access.

Click the computer's name and hit 'Share screen.'  You will see a new desktop pop up and you will be able to control that person's screen.

All other Remote Connections

For any other remote connection, a simple connection through the internet is the easiest method of choice. Google provides a cool application to Chrome which allows computers to access other screen's and have the ability to control them. The program is called "Remote Desktop Connection" and can be downloaded from the chrome store. Once the program is successfully installed and has access to your computer over the internet, you can begin accessing other computers from the following screen:

Click the 'Get Started' button under the "Remote Assistance" tab and click the button that specifies the task at hand. If you're attempting to share your screen, click the green 'Share' button. If you're trying to access another screen, click the 'Access' button. A twelve digit code will be generated and should be copied onto the other computer (the one which the person will click 'Access').

Once the connection is successful, a window will pop up in the chrome browser and you will have the ability to control that person's computer.
